The Journal of Clinical Oncology states that about 33% of breast cancer patients have lymphedema 6-18 months after having surgery. The lymph nodes that are in the breast tissue and surrounding areas are often removed during mastectomy surgery. Madeline Rose Mastectomy can help you with not only your mastectomy bra needs, but also help you manage your lymphedema symptoms.
What is the Lymphatic System and Lymphedema?

The lymphatic system is a network of lymph nodes that maintains fluid balance in the body. It manages excess fluid and the absorption of nutrients to cells. Since it transports nutrients and in turn helps fight infections/bacteria, the lymphatic system is considered a part of the immune system. There are multiple diseases that can affect the lymphatic system, but the one that is common among mastectomy patients is lymphedema. Lymphedema is when fluid is not properly being drained and is built up in the cells. This often leads to swelling in the arms and legs in addition to having uncomfortably tight skin. There is no cure for lymphedema, but there are ways to manage symptoms.
Why Use Compression Garments and How Madeline Rose Can Help
Compression garments apply pressure to the affected area enough to aid in the drainage of fluid. You should never feel pain or a restriction of blood flow when wearing compression garments (always consult your physician if you need assistance). You can find compression garments at most department stores, drug stores, and online. The drawback to these options are that size can vary from brand to brand and poor quality products can lead to stretched out garments early on.

Madeline Rose Mastectomy offers Juzo Compression Arm Sleeve Garments onsite. They are medical grade compression garments, which means that each garment is tested for compression accuracy. They do this by using higher quality synthetic fiber called Lyrca, which gives the garments a more consistent compression. We understand the importance of being able to try on and feel your garments before purchasing it. We want to make sure you feel confident in anything that you are wearing. It is as easy as stopping by our location in Vestal and speaking to a fitter about your needs.
